Sculptra Aesthetic injectable is used to reverse the signs of facial fat loss that occur with aging. By restoring collagen, which decreases as the body ages, it fills out shallow to deep wrinkles and folds that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). Once Dr. Gordon and the patient decide on a treatment plan with Sculptra, the procedure can be performed in the minor procedures room. For longer lasting results, clinical studies show that patients who receive 3 Sculptra sessions over the course of several months will keep their results for 2 years or more. If needed, Dr. Gordon can use numbing creams of local anesthesia to minimize patient discomfort during the treatment.

Patients may leave immediately after the procedure or as soon as they feel comfortable and resume their normal schedule. Some patients may have redness or swelling in the treated areas, but they should be fully recovered in 3 – 5 days. Patients should schedule a follow up visit to Dr. Gordon 1 – 2 weeks after their procedure so Dr. Gordon can document the patient’s results and check the patient’s overall health.

Dr. Gordon calculates the cost of a Sculptra treatment session based on the amount of syringes that are used to achieve the patient’s goals. Typically, a single session costs between $800 and 1,600.

Sculptra Aesthetic's main component is an alpha hydroxy acid called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a safe and long-lasting synthetic, but also a biodegradable substance. PLLA has been used for more than 20 years in many surgical products, including dissolvable sutures and soft-tissue implants.

To speed healing and results after Sculptra treatments, Dr. Gordon suggests that patients apply cold compresses to the area for the first 24 hours after the procedure to decrease the swelling. Patients should also avoid sun exposure as much as possible and any artificial UV lights, such as tanning beds. For the first 5 days after the procedure, patients should massage the treated area for up to 5 minutes to help evenly distribute the product.
