Overview
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a safe, reliable and painless way to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. In some cases, patients develop vision that is better than 20/20 after LASIK surgery. LASIK changes the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that it focuses properly on the retina and objects can be seen clearly. Surgical Technique
During the LASIK procedure, the patient will lie down in a reclining chair as the doctor positions the laser precisely over the eye. A speculum will be used to keep the eye open, the eye is cleaned and numbing drops are placed. A corneal flap is created with state-of-the-art laser. Dr. Gordon gently lifts the surface of the cornea aside so that another precision laser can then reshape the curvature of the cornea. The second eye is treated right after the first, upon which patients will be given protective shields to keep the eyes safe from bright lights after LASIK.
During/After Surgery
Patients will be in the operating room for 20 minutes, although the actual treatment time takes only a few minutes for each eye. Patients usually take 2 days for their recovery before returning to work. While patients may be uncomfortable during the first 24 hours after the procedure, they are usually able to see better the next day. Patients should return to Dr. Gordon’s office the day after their procedure for a follow up appointment so Dr. Gordon can monitor their progress.

Minimum Age?
LASIK is best for patients who are at least 20 years old since the eye can continue to change before this time. The eyes can also change after age 20, so patients may consider waiting to have LASIK eye surgery until they have had stable vision results for 1 – 2 years.
Best Candidates?
It’s estimated that almost 80% of adults are candidates for LASIK eye surgery. Patients should be in good general health, be over the age of 20, have a vision problem (astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia), and want to get rid of their glasses or contact lenses.
